Health and Safety policy

Man and Van Catford Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Catford is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and transport activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and arrangements we follow to manage risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, loading and unloading, driving, and handling of furniture and other items.

Policy Aims and Responsibilities

The aim of this policy is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health and to promote a positive safety culture throughout our operations. We will take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure that our services are delivered safely and in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation and accepted industry practices.

Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who will ensure that appropriate resources, training and supervision are provided. All employees and contractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others affected by their actions, to cooperate with this policy and to report hazards, near-misses and incidents without delay.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

We identify, assess and control risks associated with our work, including packing, lifting, carrying, loading, unloading and transporting goods. Risk assessments are reviewed regularly or when there is a significant change in our activities, equipment or working environment.

Safe working procedures are developed for key tasks, and staff are briefed on these procedures before work is carried out. Where particular risks are identified, such as working on stairs, handling heavy or awkward items, or operating in tight access areas, control measures are put in place to minimise the likelihood of injury or damage.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a core part of removal work and is managed carefully to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. We provide training in correct lifting and carrying techniques, including team lifting for large or heavy items, and encourage staff to assess the weight and balance of items before attempting to move them.

Appropriate handling equipment such as trolleys, dollies, straps and blankets is used whenever beneficial. Only trained personnel are permitted to use specialised equipment, and all equipment is inspected regularly to ensure it remains in safe working condition. Faulty or damaged equipment is taken out of service immediately.

Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards

Our vehicles are an essential part of our service, and their safe operation is a priority. Vehicles are maintained in line with manufacturer recommendations and subject to routine checks to ensure they remain roadworthy. Drivers must hold the appropriate valid driving licence and comply with all road traffic regulations.

Drivers are expected to plan routes with safety in mind, allowing sufficient time for journeys and avoiding unnecessary risk. Loads are secured correctly to prevent movement during transit, and vehicles are not overloaded. Drivers must not drive when fatigued or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that may impair their ability to drive safely.

Customer Premises and Site Safety

We recognise that our work often takes place in customer homes, business premises and shared spaces. Our staff take care to protect these environments and the people within them. This includes keeping access routes clear, using floor protection where necessary, and positioning items safely to avoid trip hazards and blocked exits.

Where shared access is used, such as communal hallways or driveways, our team will coordinate with customers and, where applicable, neighbours to minimise disruption and maintain safe access for all. Hazards that cannot be removed immediately are highlighted and, where possible, cordoned off or clearly communicated to those present.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where necessary, personal protective equipment is provided to staff and contractors. This may include protective gloves, footwear with appropriate grip and toe protection, high-visibility clothing when working near traffic or in low-light conditions, and any other equipment identified through risk assessment.

Personnel are required to use the protective equipment supplied and to take reasonable care of it. Any defects or issues with protective equipment must be reported as soon as they are noticed so that replacements or repairs can be arranged.

Training, Information and Supervision

We provide health and safety induction and ongoing training to ensure staff are competent to carry out their roles safely. Training covers topics such as manual handling, safe loading and unloading, vehicle safety, incident reporting and emergency procedures. Additional training is provided when there are changes to work practices, equipment or legal requirements.

Supervision is proportionate to the level of experience and the risks involved in the work being undertaken. New or less experienced staff are closely supervised until they demonstrate the required level of competence and understanding.

Accident, Incident and Near-Miss Reporting

All accidents, incidents and near-misses must be reported promptly to management. This enables us to investigate causes, record findings and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Where required, incidents will be reported to the relevant authorities in line with statutory requirements.

We encourage open reporting and do not tolerate victimisation of anyone who raises genuine safety concerns or reports an incident. Lessons learned from incidents are shared with staff and used to improve our procedures and training.

Emergency Preparedness

Our teams are briefed on basic emergency procedures relevant to their work, including what to do in the event of fire, serious injury, road traffic collision or sudden illness. Drivers carry basic safety equipment in vehicles where appropriate, and staff are informed of how to summon emergency services quickly when needed.

At customer premises, our staff will cooperate with any existing emergency arrangements and follow instructions from responsible persons, such as building managers or owners, in the event of an emergency.

Consultation and Continuous Improvement

We value feedback from employees, contractors and customers regarding health and safety matters and encourage suggestions for improvement. Health and safety performance is reviewed periodically by management to identify trends, address shortcomings and update this policy as necessary.

This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective, relevant to our removal and transport services and aligned with current legal and industry standards. All staff are made aware of any significant changes to the policy or associated procedures.
